BIOGRAPHY:
Dr. George Gregory Buttigieg is a senior Obstetrician and Gynecologist, who, since retiring from the Maltese NHS, has increased his teaching commitments at the University of Malta and also devoted his professional time fully to medico-legal medicine. After a lifetime of intense obstetrical and gynecological surgical practice, George is admirably poised to apply his experience to the medico-legal scene. He is no new comer, having served for many years as a Court appointed an expert. Published extensively, he is currently coming his scientific papers on the medico-legal side, firmly believing that this aspect should be taken a step further and exploited constructively in specific modules to teach both under- and post-graduate medical students.
Among his medico-legal interests, George has repeatedly focused on both neurological damage of the new-born as well antenatal electronic fetal monitoring. He stresses that both disciplines need much reviewing, both in themselves and especially so when facing the application of legal principles in Court. These specific interests do not rule out delving in many legal aspects of any medical specialty. Besides his already published papers, George also has a number of others in line, dealing with various medico-legal topics, including the legal aspect itself, such as the latest challenge to the Bolam test by the ruling in Nadine Montgomery vs Lanarkshire Health Board.
Dr. George is a Fellow of the RCOG as well as the RCPI and has held a number of posts, including being a member of the Maltese Medical Council, Malta’s representative for the RCOG UK, Malta’s Representative at the European Boards of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and many other related positions. He also holds the rank of Knight Grand Cross of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta.
